Apparently, I’m Too Fat to Ski

Good morning! It’s been busy over here. My partner and I are scrambling to finish up the other adobe house (OK, we’re technically living in a garage right now) on our land, racing farming season, which is right around the corner. We officially have a pantry! With a root cellar! And a counter! And cabinets! But we still have a lot to do.

One thing at a time, the same motto I’ll take with me into the office this week.

What I’m reading

How Being LGBTQ Affected My AT Thru-Hike: Lucy Parks found trail culture far from fully accepting but refused to let fear stop them from thru-hiking the AT. [Lucy Parks for Outside]

I Am 35 and Running Faster Than I Ever Thought Possible: My quest to qualify for the Olympic marathon team trials. [Lindsay Crouse for The New York Times]

Adventure-Proof Natural Deodorants That Actually Work: Six testers ran, climbed, hiked, and played outside with 17 different deodorants. Here's what didn't stink. [Corey Buhay for Outside]

Meet the Firefighter Who Got Fired for Fire Instagram Content: Presley Pritchard's superiors regularly criticized her photos and videos for being too racy. After being fired last summer for violating a nonexistent social media policy, she's suing. [Katie Way for Vice]

How to Manage Politics and Your Parents: What do you do when your parents' political views directly impact your life? [Blair Braverman for Outside]

Navajo Nation Homes Get Addresses From Google Mapping Project: Many homes on the Navajo Nation don’t have street addresses, which can cause problems for voter registration and emergency services. That’s starting to change thanks to a first-of-its-kind partnership between the nonprofit Rural Utah Project and Google. [Melissa Sevigny for KNAU]

Utah Wanted All the Tourists. Then It Got Them. As red-rock meccas like Moab, Zion, and Arches become overrun with visitors, our writer wonders if Utah's celebrated Mighty Five ad campaign worked too well—and who gets to decide when a destination is "at capacity." [Mark Sundeen for Outside]

Apparently, I’m Too Fat to Ski: I’ve been sized out of hiking, camping, skiing, skating, snow-shoeing; honestly most of winter, simply because I cannot find apparel to keep my body warm and dry. [Marielle Elizabeth for The Cut]

What Australia's Megafires Mean for the West: Australia's bushfires have scorched 27 million acres, more than 10 times the area burned in California's catastrophic 2018 wildfire season. The way that Australia is dealing with devastation, and how quickly that devastation came, feels like a spooky portent for what’s coming next. [Heather Hansman for Outside]
